Panasonic Toughbook U1

$2,500.00 Released April, 2008

Product Shot 1 The Pros:Much more rugged construction and sealing than most other tablets, ideal for industrial or construction work scenarios. Barcode scanner is a unique feature and useful for working with products. Batteries can be changed on the fly.

The Cons:Screen is much smaller than typical tablet PCs. Keyboard layout is unconventional and not entirely convenient. Expensive for this type of computer.

The U1 is one of two models in the 'ultra-mobile-rugged' category of Panasonic Toughbook notebook computers. The Toughbook U1 is highly mobile: at 2.3 lbs, it is the lightest in the Toughbook series, and it features a strap and dual hot-swappable batteries providing 9 hours of battery life.

Where to Buy

The display is a 5.6", touchscreen, anti-glare, LED-backlit LCD, on either side of which is a built-in stylus holder. With only a reduced QWERTY keyboard below the display, the device resembles a tablet PC more than a full laptop in design. Necessarily compromising on performance for ultra-mobility, the U1 features a 1.33GHz Intel Atom Processor and 1 GB of RAM. It is available with 16 or 32 GB of SSD memory rather than a hard drive. Draft-n wi-fi, Bluetooth v2.0+EDR, and, optionally, global broadband are included to maximize mobility, while optional fingerprint and SmartCard readers, as well as a standard theft protection system, aim to ensure adequate security. Windows Vista Business normally arrives preloaded, but buyers can choose to downgrade to XP.
